I had the opportunity to participate in ATxEnterprise 2024 last week.

This event was organised by Informa Tech and hosted at Singapore EXPO, which featured conferences and exhibition marketplaces catering to B2B enterprises across Technology, Broadcast Media, Infocomm, Satellite Communications, and start-ups.

You can imagine the buzzword that was commonly mentioned from many booths…Yes, A.I. (Artificial Intelligence). Is AI still a hype? Or is this the next big thing, Industry 5.0?

AI sharing at ATxEnterprise

There were multiple stages in that were available at ATxEnterprise. Different speakers were sharing their ideas, outlook and even fireside chats with panels in different industries. The whole event was an eye-opener and if only I have multiple doubles to attend and listen all the valuable sharing…

One of the most interesting session I attended at ATxEnterprise was about how AI will change or evolve the broadcasting and media industry. This was presented by Dave Ulmer, CEO of Cambodian Broadcasting Service.

AI in broadcasting: Revolution or Evolution (ATxEnterprise 2024)

Before sharing, I would like to shoutout to Dave and his team for preparing the following materials which I hope will help you see another use case of AI in different industries.

Let’s cut the chase short!

5 predictions on AI on Broadcasting at ATxEnterprise 2024

Prediction #1: AI Hosts Go Mainstream

In Dave’s predictions, he discussed that news anchors, talk show hosts could and would be in trouble with AI.

In the world of Broadcast, there is a conglomerate in the U.S., called Sinclair Broadcast Group (NASDAQ:SBGI) that has close to 200 television stations that covered more than 40% of American households.

According to Dave, a master script is sent to its affiliate broadcasting stations and news anchors simply read off the script and distribute information. With AI, how relevant are news anchors that are just going to read off the teleprompter huh?

This will affect certain front-facing roles and it also depicts how vulnerable jobs can be with technological advancements and corporations targeting operational efficiencies. When jobs are no longer required, your ability and willingness to grab opportunities will be important for you to find your next path to success.

That is why in GoodWhale, you need to be free from any monetary constraints to be the best version of yourself. One problem about that is that not everyone is aware how to break free from the endless loop.

How can you be more aware?

Board games, like the Wealth of Life that GoodWhale is organizing allows individuals to play and learn concepts about life, why it’s important to achieve financial freedom, and how investing plays a part in that.

Prediction #2: A Live Sports Revolution

In my opinion, this is the game changer!

The one thing that streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+ and Paramount Plus have that makes them powerful in the long run is the data of its users. Their preferences, their behaviours and etc.

Recommendation is the secret sauce

This is where recommendations of content to users are very important for users to continue watching and subscribe. Ultimately, it comes down to user experience.

In the world of sports, there are fans and die-hard fans. If you are in to team sports, then apart from the team, you might be rooting for a specific player. And in any match available currently, the footage on your favourite athlete might be limited, especially the case if the cameraman doesn’t react fast enough.

That said, with smart cameras tracking the action automatically, undirected, it increases footage with the best angles, moments as well as generating key highlights real-time.

Real-time + AI Hosts

With the capturing of data from the athletes, it will provide real-time analytics on the statistics, odds, analysis of the team. If layered with AI Announcers, it now opens up live commentary in every possible language, on specific players that the viewers are supporting.

These will likely increase the user experience and have them coming back for more in the future!

Prediction #3: The Rise of Precognitive Ratings Services

Have you ever wondered why certain shows or movies sell so well while some turned out so bad?

Well, to producers and film directors, this is a constant reminder. This could be their winning film to being famous! You probably wouldn’t know Hwang Dong-hyuk if Squid Game wasn’t such a big hit.

Now, what if with data analytics and precision prediction, it allows the producer or film makers to foresee the new program’s success before it was even created?

This insights can help save resources to production houses like Paramount, Universal Pictures, and Warner Bros. More resources to work with means it is still up to the managements’ ability to bring the company to a greater height! That is why knowing the management inside out matters! Prediction #4: 1st AI-Written Hit Series

A show that’s produced from a completely AI-generated script will win an Emmy award for best original series.

The world have seen how writers have reacted through the “Netflix Strike” as streaming became a norm. This came with a caveat that impacted writers’ income. In an article I wrote for Wealth Pulse last year July on Netflix, I shared about a short 3-min anime produced by Netflix. The comments were negative and most commented that it was unethical.

Coming back, if a show that was created off a script generated by AI and it were to win an Emmy, I am quite certain the people working in this industry might replicate similar emotions as AI-generated picture won an Art Prize.

I’m not surprise this prediction will happen sooner than expected. That said, when it does, I foresee a change in how Emmy is awarded. Probably a sub-segment under AI Creations.

Prediction #5: Consolidations

In the business world, consolidations happen. Some Merger and Acquisition (M&A) are useful or detrimental to the company.

One of the main purposes of M&A is to create synergy between the two companies. This should bring the united company to new heights with boosted capabilities. That’s why companies merge or acquire smaller companies.

One example of a successful merger and acquisition of a company is Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO).

With multiple M&A over the years, initially started as the acquired side, Broadcom made its way to the buy side and acquired businesses in the later part of its journey.

The rest as many put it is… history.

Key M&A requirements for success!

In my opinion, successful M&A depends heavily on other factors apart from the potential synergy of the two companies. The crucial factors are cash and cash flow of the company that is buying.

Does the company have money to acquire the other business? This includes the buffer in case certain acquisitions fall through and a break-up termination fee is awarded to the company that was supposed to be acquired. A good example is the failed merger between Adobe and Figma. That $1 Billion termination fee means YAY for Figma, but not so much for Adobe.

Secondly, the cash flow. Does the company have enough cash flow to sustain the business?

Now that the business has increased in size, revenue should increase. However, that also meant the expenses would also spike up. If the acquired business is unable to help the company start generating revenue and translate it to profits, that’s a problem. That new business is in cash-burning mode.

The main company will have to utilize its current cash or cash flow to fund the operations until the acquired business can start generating returns. Soon!

Coming back, here are the 3 consolidations that Dave predict will happen…

Apple acquiring Netflix.

Amazon acquiring Paramount.

Elon buying Disney.

Only time can tell if these predictions will play out.

I was quite surprised to hear about Amazon acquiring Paramount. One is because Warren Buffett disclosed about Berkshire’s exit on it’s Paramount positions during Berkshire Hathaway’s AGM 2024.
